April 2025

缅北禁地 has announced the Summer Reading Program selection for 2025 is Tracy K. Smith鈥檚 memoir Ordinary Light, a finalist for the National Book Award. The College will welcome Smith, a Pulitzer Prize-winning poet and memoirist, to campus in the fall 2025 semester.

When the early rounds of the 2025 men鈥檚 and women鈥檚 March Madness basketball tournaments were held in Raleigh, 缅北禁地 student Cambria Chandler, 鈥26, got to experience these major athletic events up close through a job with NC State Athletics.听

Meredith alumnae Cinda (Bodford) Alexander, 鈥83, and Elizabeth (Alexander) Green, 鈥12, visited a hospitality management class on Wednesday, February 26, to share their wisdom and experience as owners of Lux Lineage, a boutique floral design business based in the Winston-Salem area.

Assistant Professor of Psychology Jenna McChesney has been awarded the 2025 Rains Wallace Dissertation Award from the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology (SIOP) for her research on how job applicants disclosing anxiety and depression on LinkedIn are evaluated.听

缅北禁地 raised $1,582,557 in 24 hours during the College鈥檚 10th annual Make It Count for Meredith Giving Day, held on February 25, 2025. The fundraising event exceeded its $1.2 million fundraising goal by more than $300,000, and a total of 2,522 donors contributed to the campaign.听

缅北禁地鈥檚 This Is Meredith video was featured on ESPN+ during the broadcast of the 2025 Winter World University Games from Torino, Italy. Meredith鈥檚 in-house video team produced the ad.

缅北禁地 has recently launched a commercial photo site where alumnae, students, and friends of the College can purchase professional photos for gifts, decor, and more.

A comprehensive accessibility resource is now available on Meredith.edu to help connect prospective students, future employees, alumnae, and other campus visitors with information about accommodations and Meredith鈥檚 physical accessibility resources.

The North Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities (NCICU) held their annual development conference at 缅北禁地 on Tuesday, January 7. A total of 115 fundraisers from 27 institutions attended to listen to a variety of interactive sessions and network with colleagues.听

The College is grateful to alumnae, friends, faculty, and staff for their continued support of 缅北禁地 in the first half of the fiscal year. Gifts and various efforts by volunteers show their support for Meredith students and the entire campus community.

The Office of Institutional Advancement held events in December for students, alumnae, and donors. Each unique event is a way to show these audiences how much Meredith treasures their commitment to the institution.

When prospective students are conducting their college search, learning about the career preparation resources available is important. At Meredith, the Office of Career Planning (OCP) supports students and alumnae. To learn more, we asked Director of Career Planning Dana Sumner to share some highlights from 2024 and to look ahead to what is planned for 2025.

缅北禁地 was recently recognized as an 鈥淚nternational College of Distinction.鈥 This award gives special recognition to colleges and universities that provide exceptional support for international students to help them thrive during their academic journeys.

Sharysse Ferguson, a senior in the Fashion Merchandising and Design program, has been selected as a recipient of the NRF Foundation x CVS Health Retail Leaders Scholarship. This prestigious scholarship aims to increase representation and interest in store leadership opportunities.

缅北禁地 will waive application fees for prospective students from Western North Carolina counties from December 4-6, 2024.听This additional opportunity for Western North Carolina students is being provided this year because College Application Week was held while these areas dealt with the immediate effects of Hurricane Helene.

November 2024

缅北禁地 welcomed more than 200 study abroad alumnae, faculty, and supporters to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Meredith Abroad. The reception in honor of this milestone year was held on November 21, 2024, in Johnson Hall Rotunda.

October 2024

The Class of 1973 recently celebrated reaching its 50th Reunion Class Project goal of $200,000 to establish the Class of 1973 Campus Garden and Beautification Fund that will be used to support the Dickson Foundation Community Garden.

To support students in their college search process, Meredith participates in the North Carolina College Foundation College Application Week, October 21-27. During this period, students can apply to the College for free.

缅北禁地 has rolled out a new, comprehensive campus calendar on its website, meredith.edu. The calendar is a significant improvement from the previous iteration with the addition of visuals, a robust search function, a rotating 鈥渇eatured event,鈥 and more.

缅北禁地 juniors participated in Ring Week October 14-18, one of the most treasured traditions at Meredith.

缅北禁地 recently removed potential application barriers for transfer students by reducing the number of credit hours required to submit a high school transcript and removing the school official recommendation form from transfer student applications.

September 2024

Alumnae and friends of 缅北禁地, including faculty/staff, have been vital in supporting our students throughout the past fiscal year. Through contributions and volunteer efforts, they’ve demonstrated a deep commitment to enhancing every aspect of student life.

The most recent Meredith Poll underscores North Carolina鈥檚 status as a battleground state, showing candidates Kamala Harris and Donald Trump tied at 48 percent apiece.听The poll also examined voter preferences in the N.C. governor鈥檚 race, favorability of presidential and vice presidential candidates, and the potential impact of several policy issues.

Mitchell Brown, 鈥93, a political science professor at Auburn University, presented 鈥淯.S. Elections and Our Mutual Obligations,鈥 at 缅北禁地 on September 16, 2024, in observance of Constitution Day.

Heather White, founder and CEO of One Green Thing, presented 鈥淕reen Civics: Democracy Isn鈥檛 a Spectator Sport,鈥 at 缅北禁地 on September 10, 2024. The lecture was part of the Summer Reading Program theme, 鈥淪trong Voices: Empowering Student Citizenship.鈥

Ten students in Meredith鈥檚 Engineering Dual Degree program participated in NC State鈥檚 Freshman Engineering Design Day (FEDD) event. FEDD is an end-of-semester opportunity for first-year engineering student teams to showcase their design projects and compete for awards.听

缅北禁地 alumna Natalya Brown, 鈥21, is a Fulbright Award recipient for 2024-25. She will teach English in Madrid, Spain. Brown was supported by 缅北禁地 and mentored by faculty member Dr. Vilma Concha-Chiaraviglio through the application process.听

May 2024

缅北禁地 student Ashley Andrade recently was awarded a study abroad grant worth $1,000 from The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi 鈥 the nation’s oldest and most selective collegiate honor society for all academic disciplines. Andrade is one of 125 students nationwide to receive the award.

Amanda Morales recently completed her first semester as Meredith鈥檚 director of residence life as part of her more than 14-year career as a college housing professional. Learn more about Morales and her role at Meredith.

Four students in the incoming Class of 2028 have been selected to receive 缅北禁地鈥檚 top scholarship. These students are recipients of the Meredith Full-Ride Merit Scholarship, in recognition of their academic achievement, leadership, service, and character.

缅北禁地 held commencement for the Class of 2024 on Saturday, May 11. Two ceremonies were held in the courtyard behind Johnson Hall to celebrate more than 490 undergraduate and graduate members of the class.听

The rollout of the 2024-25 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) has had numerous problems. As a result, some Meredith students, both current and incoming, still need to complete their FAFSA. Doing so is important because completing the FAFSA every year a student is in school is the only way to access all of the financial aid they are eligible to receive.

This spring student-athletes, coaches, parents and families, and members of the Meredith Alumnae Association gathered in the Johnson Hall Rotunda for ring ceremonies to celebrate Meredith鈥檚听 USA South Conference champions.听

 

 

缅北禁地鈥檚 2024 Summer Reading Program theme is 鈥淪trong Voices: Empowering Student Citizenship.鈥 The program will be built around a central text, The Bill of Obligations by Richard Haass, which offers a straightforward and clear discussion of basic expectations for American citizenship.

Dr. Jo Allen has received the Order of the Long Leaf Pine, the highest honor for service in the State of North Carolina. The Office of the Governor grants the award to individuals with 30 or more years of service to North Carolina.

The Board of Trustees at 缅北禁地 has officially approved the establishment of a new nursing program, marking a pivotal moment in the institution鈥檚 history in response to the critical shortage of nurses in N.C. and the nation.听

Three Meredith scholars who were awarded the College鈥檚 highest academic honor, the Full-Ride Merit Scholarship, were celebrated on Friday, April 19, 2024, as they prepare to graduate.

缅北禁地 held its annual awards and recognition celebration for employees on April 15, 2024. Faculty and Staff recognition awards were presented, and employees who reached milestone years of employment during the 2023-24 academic year were听 recognized for their service.听

缅北禁地鈥檚 22nd annual Celebrating Student Achievement (CSA) Day was held on Thursday, April 18, 2024.听听This Meredith tradition offered a full day showcasing student work, from the 8:30 a.m. poster session in the Carlyle Campbell Library to departmental events in the evening.听

The 2024 senior art exhibition听Ruminate: Chew On This will be on exhibition in the Frankie G. Weems Gallery at 缅北禁地 this spring.听Tasha Aaron, Kayla Cooper, Shelby Cox, Arianne Gonzalez, Sara Grace Lane, Karlie Mullis, Emma Relota, and Sara-Rose Spann are excited to showcase their unique bodies of work.听

Students in Meredith鈥檚 Industrial-Organizational (I-O) Psychology master鈥檚 degree program were able to demonstrate their skills by participating in the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology (SIOP) National Consulting Challenge Case Competition.

Research shows living on campus provides numerous benefits to students, including greater likelihood to make friends and be involved in the community. As students make housing plans for the next academic year, the Office of Residence Life shares some recent updates.

 

March 2024

缅北禁地 has named Aimee W. Sapp to serve as its ninth president.听The president-elect was introduced by the 缅北禁地 Board of Trustees during a campus celebration on March 27, 2024, at 3:30 p.m. in Jones Auditorium.

缅北禁地 has extended the Enrollment Deposit Deadline to May 15 to give incoming students and families additional time to make their decision. Financial aid offers have been delayed because of changes to 2024-25 the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

缅北禁地 student Emma Brooks, 鈥24, has been featured on the website of Women in Data Science (WiDS) Worldwide.听 Brooks is earning a degree in mathematics and computer science with a minor in data science. In the WiDs article, she discusses how her interest in data science began at Meredith.

February 2024

缅北禁地 raised $1,419,575 in 24 hours during the College鈥檚 ninth annual Make It Count for Meredith Giving Day, held on February 27, 2024. The fundraising event exceeded its $1.1 million fundraising goal by more than $300,000, and a total of 2,630 donors contributed to the campaign.

The updated Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA庐) is now available for students and families to complete. The 2024-25 FAFSA form was initially made available periodically as part of what is described as a 鈥渟oft launch.鈥

Meredith students are now producing a biweekly show from the news studio in the Communication and Health, Exercise & Sport Sciences (CHESS) building.

Every four years since 1924, 缅北禁地 faculty and staff present a performance of Alice in Wonderland as a gift to students. To help mark its 100th anniversary, the College held a Woman of Achievement event on January 25 showcasing this beloved tradition’s history.听

December 2023

Kagure Wamunyu, 鈥13, returned to 缅北禁地 to share life lessons with students. At the lunch, Wamunyu shared what she has learned throughout her journey from her time at Meredith to her current entrepreneurial pursuits in Kenya.听

Meredith鈥檚 Post-Baccalaureate Digital Media Certificate program recently added a team of professionals to serve as an Advisory Board for digital media students. The Board will provide students with critiques on reels, give resume advice, and answer other general questions.

November 2023

缅北禁地 welcomed more than 350 students to 鈥渟hare, learn, and celebrate dance鈥 as part of High School Day of Dance. This event, held on campus on November 3, was sponsored by the 缅北禁地 Dance Program.

The Fall 2023 Senior Art Exhibition, Memoirs: Unveiling Identity, will be featured in the Frankie G. Weems Gallery at 缅北禁地. Four emerging artists will showcase their artistic growth and development during their undergraduate program. Camille Duncan, Hannah Cox, Kelly Johnson, and Morgan Thompson are studio art, graphic design, and art education majors who are proud to share their milestones through their extensive and diverse portfolios.

 

Over the weekend of November 3-5, a group of Italian language students at Meredith embarked on a field trip to Charleston S.C., with their instructor, Adjunct Professor Sandra Pesoli to attend the 17th NCIFF – Nuovo Cinema Italiano Film Festival.听This field trip to the festival, which Pesoli organizes every year, offers numerous benefits for the students who go, both academically and personally.听

缅北禁地 held its 2023 Honoring Women Veterans event on Wednesday, Nov. 8, in Jones Chapel.听The annual event honors all veterans, with special emphasis on the contributions of women veterans. It is presented by the 缅北禁地 Honoring Women Veterans Committee.听

缅北禁地 hosted the North Carolina Association on Higher Education and Disability鈥檚 () annual conference, Equity & Excellence: Access in Higher Education.听

FAFSA Changes for 2024-25 include a later opening date, which will take place by December 31 rather than October as it has in years past. The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form has been simplified as part of the FAFSA Simplification Act, which was passed as part of the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2021.

October 2023

缅北禁地 has finalized a new articulation agreement with NC State that provides priority admission into Meredith鈥檚 Master of Science in Nutrition鈥Accelerated Dietitian Nutritionist Track (MS-ADNT) to up to four qualified NC State nutrition science undergraduate students.听

In May 2021, 缅北禁地 received a grant from the Arthur Vining Davis Foundations to support Cultivating Equitable and Inclusive Pedagogical Practices in STEM Higher Education, a project that aims to create fully inclusive and equity-based STEM programs at Meredith. Project researchers have an update on the project findings.听

For 16 years, 缅北禁地 has awarded the Alumnae Legacy Scholarship, the College鈥檚 most prestigious, full-ride scholarship, to strong women looking for a top-notch education. Now, as the Meredith Full-Ride Merit Scholarship, it retains its original intent of bringing exceptional scholars and leaders to Meredith鈥檚 campus and preparing them for lives of impact and distinction.

缅北禁地 hosted an event for Project Plasma on October 4, in observance of International Plasma Awareness Week 2023. Approximately 120 Meredith faculty, staff, and students attended the fair, where they learned facts about plasma and the importance of plasma donation. Participants were also able to share their reasons for donating.

When a new historical marker was unveiled in downtown Raleigh on September 22, 2023, a group of 缅北禁地 students, alumnae, and faculty were on hand to celebrate. The new marker, which now stands near the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences, commemorates the women mathematicians who worked as 鈥渉uman computers鈥 for the U.S. space program and military. 缅北禁地 alumnae are among the women whose work is recognized with this new marker.

September 2023

缅北禁地 hosted a groundbreaking ceremony on September 8, 2023, to celebrate the construction of a new softball, tennis, and golf complex that will allow athletes adequate space to train. Chris Speight Brown, 鈥76, along with her siblings, gave a $1 million lead gift that will name the Estes-Speight Family Athletic Complex in memory of her mother Mary Estes Speight, 始53, and her father Bobby Speight.听

September is National Preparedness Month in the United States. Sponsored by ready.gov, National Preparedness Month is a campaign to educate and empower people to prepare for, respond to, and mitigate emergencies, including natural and man-made disasters.听缅北禁地鈥檚 Student Health Center is providing several opportunities for the Meredith community to get information that will help increase preparedness in emergencies.听

Meredith鈥檚 Department of Education faculty went 鈥渂ack to school鈥 this fall, visiting the classrooms of beginning teachers who recently graduated from the College. These visits, which occurred during teacher workdays before the start of the new school year, were just one way 缅北禁地 is supporting new educators.

August 2023

An event celebrating a new historical marker in downtown Raleigh commemorating the women who worked as 鈥渉uman computers鈥 for the U.S. space program and military will be held on Friday, Sept. 22, 2023, at 10:30 a.m. at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences. This marker was proposed by students in Meredith鈥檚 Spring 2020 Public History course who conducted research to identify Meredith alumnae and other North Carolinians who worked in these fields.

As 缅北禁地 kicks off another academic year, a number of community members shared some advice for incoming students.

缅北禁地 is launching a new Master of Arts in Biomedical Sciences (MABMS) program, with students entering in the fall of 2024. The program鈥檚 focus is two-fold. It will enhance students鈥 academic qualifications for admission to a health professional school. It can also help students who are pursuing careers in the healthcare industry, particularly those who require a master鈥檚 degree to advance professionally.

On August 19, 2023, 缅北禁地 welcomed new students to campus. Alumnae, faculty, staff, and student leaders were on hand to celebrate the arrival of new students, families, and friends, who were greeted by a rainbow arch and cheering students.

缅北禁地 will hold a Service of Remembrance for Professor of Mathematics Tim Hendrix on September 13, 2023, at 10 a.m. in Jones Chapel.听A member of the Meredith faculty since 2002, Hendrix passed away on July 16, 2023. He is remembered as a gifted educator who was much loved by his students.听

The American Dance Festival in association with 缅北禁地 presents Les Ballets Afrik on Thursday, September 14, and Friday, September 15, 2023, at 7:30 p.m. The performances will be held in Jones Auditorium on the 缅北禁地 campus. ADF鈥檚 presentation of Les Ballet Afrik is supported by the United Arts Council of Raleigh and Wake County.

缅北禁地 has begun a renovation of Jones Auditorium, which was built in 1949. Phase one of the project, which includes new seating, new carpet, lighting, sound system, a new mechanical lift for accessibility, and general upgrades, started in July 2023. Phase one of the renovation is supported by a听 lead gift from Lisa Robie Poole, 鈥86, and her husband, Ven Poole.

An update on 缅北禁地’s Summer Reading Program plan for 2023 was shared with the campus community on July 6.

Associate Professor of Practice Alan Buck, a faculty member in 缅北禁地鈥檚 Communication Department served as a Fulbright Specialist in 2022-23, supporting the Journalism and Mass Communication Department at the University of Eswatini.

May 2023

缅北禁地 held a special commencement ceremony for its USA South Championship Lacrosse team seniors on Wednesday, May 10, 2023, in the Johnson Hall Rotunda. The 11:30 a.m. ceremony was held because the team qualified for the NCAA Division III tournament, and round one will occur on May 13, the same day as Meredith鈥檚 regular commencement exercises.听

The Meredith lacrosse program captured its ninth consecutive USA South tournament title with an 11-10 nail-biting victory over Southern Virginia Saturday afternoon at the Meredith Track & Field Complex. This win secures the Avenging Angels a spot in the NCAA tournament. Their first-round game will be Saturday, May 13, in Salisbury, Md., against Washington & Jefferson College.听

Two 缅北禁地 teams participated in DataFest at NC State this spring, with both teams earning awards. DataFest is an event sponsored by the American Statistical Association and held at schools around the country each spring. The event lasts from Friday evening through Sunday afternoon, while undergraduate teams compete to explore and analyze a secret data set provided by an anonymous client. Teams share insights in a brief presentation at the end of the event.听

After conducting a national search, 缅北禁地 has named听Dr. Shannon M.听 Yates as its next athletic director. Dr. Yates comes to Meredith after serving 26 years in athletic administration including three Division I universities and an N.C. community college.

April 2023

The Colton Review, 缅北禁地鈥檚 art and literary journal that features work from students, faculty, staff, and alumnae and is produced for and by students, was unveiled on Celebrating Student Achievement Day.

For the first time since 2019, Celebrating Student Achievement Day (CSA Day) was held in person on Thursday, April 13, 2023. CSA Day is an all-day conference during which students showcase the research they have conducted over the year in poster and oral presentation sessions to their peers, professors, and the 缅北禁地 community. With more than 45 presentations held this year, attendees heard about a wide range of topics from biology to art and design.

Spring at the Office of International Programs (OIP) is a time when many students are preparing for summer and fall study abroad programs. However, other Meredith students have just returned from Meredith鈥檚 Italian home in Sansepolcro, Italy, after a spring break study abroad adventure.

The Frankie G. Weems Gallery at 缅北禁地 will be featuring the Spring 2023 Senior Art Exhibition. In the exhibition, titled TRANSFIGURATION, seven emerging artists will showcase their analysis of growth and development during their undergraduate program.

April is Autism Acceptance Month. The Meredith Autism Program (MAP) is an early intervention program that serves preschool aged children in the triangle area diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder. It is our mission to offer value-based care through the implementation of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) in order for autistic children to reach their fullest potential.

缅北禁地 welcomed Tony Award-winning alumna Beth Leavel back to campus on April 4 to receive the 2023 Woman of Achievement Award. A celebration of the award was held at 7 p.m. in Jones Auditorium. Earlier in the day, Leavel also visited with theatre classes and answered questions from students.

 

March 2023

缅北禁地 student-athlete Corrine Weaver has been named Division III National Athlete of the Week by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). This is the first time in program history that an athlete from Meredith has received this honor.

On its 100th anniversary, Kappa Nu Sigma (KNS) held the spring induction ceremony March 2, 2023, in Jones Chapel. KNS is the highest academic honors society at Meredith.

缅北禁地 has again made the list of 鈥淭op 50 Alma Maters of National Board Certified Teachers 鈥 by total number of alumnae/i to hold this distinction. Meredith earned this recognition with 494 alumnae/i who have earned National Board for Professional Teaching Standards certification. At 46 in the nation, Meredith is the only independent college in North Carolina to make the list. The College first made the Top 50 ranking in 2014.

缅北禁地 raised $1,349,106 in just 24 hours during the College鈥檚 eighth annual Make It Count for Meredith Giving Day, held on February 28, 2023. The fundraising event exceeded its $1 million fundraising goal by more than $300,000, and a total of 2,762 donors contributed to the campaign. Initially, a total of $1,329,823 was raised but additional cash gifts were counted from the day that were not given on the Giving Day website.

缅北禁地 has added a new pathway for those wanting to pursue a career in nutrition. The M.S. in Nutrition 鈥 Accelerated Dietitian Nutritionist Track (ADNT) is designed for students with bachelor鈥檚 degrees who want to become registered dietitian nutritionists (RDNs) in just two years.

February 11 brought more than 75 high school juniors from across Wake County to 缅北禁地 for the Leadership Conference for High School Juniors. Although this was the event鈥檚 first year back on campus since February 2020, the leadership conference has been held at Meredith for more than 15 years.听

 

Meredith鈥檚 Exercise and Sport Sciences (ESS) seniors who will graduate in May 2023 are celebrating job offers and acceptances to professional and graduate school programs well before graduation.

Students from the Italian program at 缅北禁地 attended the 16th annual Nuovo Cinema Italiano Film Festival in Charleston, S.C., November 11-13, 2022, together with their instructor, Sandra Pesoli.

The Meredith Cross Country program finished atop the USA South standings to finish the 2022 season while also seeing freshman Amethyst Joseph win rookie of the year and head coach Field Miller win coach of the year.

The most recent Meredith Poll, in the field October 27-30, 2022, provides a snapshot of North Carolina voter opinions in the final days of the 2022 Midterms.听Along with preferences on senate candidates, satisfaction with the direction of the country and the state, and approval of the president, governor, and the Supreme Court, the poll examined political polarization. The new poll found that voter enthusiasm remains high and major races remain close.

A recent campus visit by author Venita Blackburn was an inspiring opportunity for 缅北禁地 students. The Department of English hosted a public reading on September 21 and Blackburn also interacted with students in a writing workshop.

In the 2022-23 Faculty Distinguished Lecture, Professor of Finance Bing Yu presented 鈥淚mpact Investing: Driving Capitalists to Do Good While Doing Well.鈥 The lecture was held on Thursday, October 13, 2022, at 7 p.m., in Jones Auditorium.听

The Frankie G. Weems Gallery at 缅北禁地 featured the work of local artist Kulsum Tasnif, a mixed-media artist and transmedia storyteller. The Protest Purse focuses on female strength and empowerment.听 This exhibition was displayed from October 11 – November 6, 2022, at the Frankie G. Weems Gallery at 缅北禁地.

As Election Day 2022 fast approaches, a new tool has been launched to make the process easier for North Carolina voters. The site, , was created by 缅北禁地 Associate Professor of Political Science Whitney Ross Manzo and UNC-Chapel Hill Associate Professor of Public Policy Rebecca Kreitzer.

The most recent Meredith Poll, in the field September 20-23, 2022, asked North Carolina voters their opinions on a variety of hot-button issues as the 2022 midterms approach. Along with preferences on senate candidates and approval of the president, governor, and the Supreme Court, the poll covered voter satisfaction with the direction of the country and the state, reaction to the Supreme Court鈥檚 Dobbs decision, and preferences on possible state legislation on abortion, and federal legislation protection same-sex marriage and access to contraception. The poll also examined voter views on democracy and political violence.听

缅北禁地 celebrated 50 years of its adult education program, Wings, with an anniversary event on Thursday, September 15, 2022. Alumnae, past directors, current students, faculty, and staff attended the event in Jones Auditorium that reflected on the program鈥檚 history, celebrated alumnae and current students, and recognized leaders who helped create and sustain adult education at Meredith.

National Public Radio reporter Anne Garrels, author of the 2004 Meredith Summer Reading Program (SRP) selection, passed away on September 7, 2022. Garrels, who was 71, had a more than 30-year career as a foreign correspondent for NPR, ABC, and NBC. Members of the Meredith community who were involved in bringing Garrels to campus shared remembrances of her visit.

The Capital City Girls Choir (CCGC), a program associated with 缅北禁地’s Community School of Music, has recently named Cameron Bolin as its new artistic director.

In light of the passing of Queen Elizabeth II, we are sharing a story from our archives about three Meredith students who had the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to meet the Queen while studying abroad in through Meredith’s U.K. program in 2004.

September is National Preparedness Month in the United States. This is a campaign designed to educate and empower people to prepare for, respond to, and mitigate emergencies, including natural and man-made disasters.听 Here are some resources to help Meredith employees and students be prepared, including during the current hurricane season.

The Voices of Change Political Institute, a comprehensive non-partisan training program for women, recently began its second year of training.听 A partnership of 缅北禁地, Advance NC, and the North Carolina Black Alliance,听 the Voices of Change Institute is designed to help women build their confidence and develop the practical skills to run successful campaigns and serve as powerful and effective leaders.

Students in Meredith鈥檚 Dual Degree Engineering program participated in the First-Year Engineering Design Day (FEDD) at NC State at the end of the 2021-22 academic year. FEDD is an opportunity for first-year engineering student teams to showcase their design projects.

缅北禁地 celebrated the Class of 2022 with two commencement ceremonies on Saturday, May 14, 2022. The ceremonies were held in the College鈥檚 courtyard. President Jo Allen, 鈥80, and Senior Class President Casey Corpening, 鈥22, were the featured speakers.

Professor of Religious and Ethical Studies Steven A. Benko is the editor of a recently published book that explores ethical concepts through popular television shows. Better Living Through TV: Contemporary TV and Moral Identity Formation addresses the moral meanings that audiences might take from television shows of the last 20 years.听

缅北禁地 held a special commencement ceremony in Johnson Hall for its USA South Championship Lacrosse team members at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, May 11, 2022. The team qualified for the NCAA Division III tournament and round one will occur on May 14, the same day as Meredith鈥檚 regular commencement exercises.

缅北禁地 mourns the loss of Elizabeth Grimes Droessler, who served on the education faculty from 2010-22 as part of her long career in arts education. Droessler passed away on May 4, 2022. She also served as Wake County Public Schools鈥 senior administrator for the arts for more than 30 years.听

Professor Emerita Wetonah “Toni” Rice Parker has received the Order of the Long Leaf Pine, the highest honor for service in the State of North Carolina. The award is granted by the Office of the Governor to individuals with 30 or more years of service to North Carolina.

Assistant Professor of Communication Alan Buck has been selected to complete a project at the University of Eswatini in Eswatini through the Fulbright Specialist Program. Buck鈥檚 selection for the University of Eswatini project was recently announced by the U.S. Department of State and the Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board.

To complement the resources already available and help students thrive throughout their four years and graduate on time, 缅北禁地 is rolling out a new Success Coach program in fall 2022.听The program gives students a go-to person for any issue they may face during their time at Meredith. Success coaches proactively support each student, staying in touch with frequent communication and regular engagement to keep students informed and successful while attending college.

Jeanine Carryl, 鈥22, is a computer science major who took a Principles of Marketing course 鈥 and discovered she has a real knack for marketing, going on to win a competitive case study competition.

A successful fall 2021 season has concluded for Meredith Athletics. The Avenging Angels saw program firsts, records broken, and a few student-athletes earned recognition at the national level.听 Here are a few highlights from another impressive fall season for Meredith Athletics.

In November 2021, the Office of the Chaplain, Sisters United, Meredith International Association, Meredith Immigrant and Refugee Club, and the Student Government Association (SGA) organized a basic household goods drive for Afghan refugee families moving into the Raleigh area.听

 

缅北禁地 Associate Professor of Mathematics Tim Hendrix is the recipient of the 2022 Nadine Bezuk Excellence in Leadership and Service, which is presented by the Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators (AMTE). He will be honored during the general session of AMTE鈥檚 Annual Conference in February 2022.

The renovation of the iconic Meredith lake is complete thanks to the generosity of 1,400 alumnae and friends of 缅北禁地. The College is pleased to reintroduce this space on campus for all to enjoy.听

On September 28, 2021, the Office of International Programs hosted a Study Abroad Fair for spring, summer, and fall 2022 study abroad programs. The event was held outside in the courtyard behind Johnson Hall with masks and distancing protocols in place.

On September 20, first-year students discussed this year’s summer reading book, Tell Me Who You Are: Sharing our Stories of Race, Culture and Identity.

In August, the Office of Alumnae Relations wanted to celebrate alumnae educators, administrators, and school personnel whether they were part of a year-round program or heading back to work for the start of a new school year. Alumnae were asked to self identify to receive 缅北禁地 swag for their office or classroom. It was a way for the Alumnae Office to say thank you for all they do to educate the hearts and minds of students.

缅北禁地 will require students and employees to be vaccinated against COVID-19, the College announced on September 16, 2021.听The new requirement will go into effect at the beginning of the Spring 2022 semester in order to provide those who are not yet vaccinated time to become fully vaccinated.听

缅北禁地鈥檚 Carlyle Campbell Library has received a grant that expands the number of laptops available to support student needs. The 鈥淒igital Inclusion for High Need Students鈥 grant from the State Library of North Carolina funded the purchase of 17 laptops that were added to the library鈥檚 pool of computers available to loan to students in need.听

Jenny Blazing and Carin Walsh: Turning Point, a compelling art exhibit calling for action to quell the climate crisis, is on view in the Frankie G. Weems Gallery September 2 鈥 October 1, 2021. This collaborative multimedia and video/sound installation weaves a powerful personal story, urging viewers and their families to reflect on their own relationships with the climate crisis.

Two 缅北禁地 faculty members have received a $350,000 multi-year grant from the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) to fund research examining the benefit of support systems on maternal mental health. Assistant Professor of Psychology Betty-Shannon Prevatt, Ph.D., and Assistant Professor of Child Development Pamela Norcross, Ph.D., are the co-primary investigators (PIs) on this project.

This summer 缅北禁地 has continued work on construction projects to further enhance the spaces in which students learn and live. Donor support has enabled the College to move forward with these projects.

Toni Irwin, 鈥19, curates fashion content for the top-ranked game . As a Game Fashion Designer, she works with a team of artists and designers to create concepts for each of the game鈥檚 characters as well as wardrobe and beauty options.

Results are being shared from one of the earliest, and most important, steps in Meredith’s anti-racism initiative, which was to undertake a nationally normed campus climate survey of undergraduate and graduate students, employees, and alumnae/i.

缅北禁地 has received a grant from the Arthur Vining Davis Foundations to support equitable pedagogical practices in STEM higher education. The project 鈥淐ultivating Equitable and Inclusive Pedagogical Practices in STEM Higher Education,鈥 which is funded for three years, aims to create fully inclusive and equity-based STEM programs at Meredith.听

In the Spring 2021 issue of Meredith Magazine,听 the College announced that an enhanced digital publication would be available to readers beginning in summer 2021. While the magazine has previously been available online, this revamped version offers a more immersive experience, with interactive multimedia content and more videos in an eminently shareable format.

Three recent graduates of Meredith, Briana Petrusa, 鈥21, Bailey Birtchet, 鈥21, and Delaney Rhodes, 鈥20, have been awarded Fulbright scholarships. The Fulbright Program funds scholarships for students to study, conduct research, or teach English abroad.听

Provost Matthew Poslusny announced on April 29 that Kimberly 鈥淜im鈥 Gladden Burke, Ph.D., will be the new dean of the 缅北禁地 School of Business, effective July 1, 2021.听听

The 缅北禁地 Board of Trustees has reaffirmed the decision to begin construction on a new academic building that will house two of Meredith鈥檚 growing programs: communication and exercise & sports science. The new building project was paused in 2020 because of the pandemic.

According to Gallup, wellbeing comprises five areas: Purpose/career, social, financial, physical, and community. When our wellbeing suffers, we are less engaged in our lives. Applying our strengths is one way of improving our wellbeing.

The Spring 2021 Meredith Poll asked North Carolina voters to share their opinions on a variety of current issues, and to look ahead to the next senate primaries. Topics covered include satisfaction with the direction of the state and the country, approval of President Joe Biden and N.C. Governor Roy Cooper, and opinions on distracted driving, increasing the minimum wage, COVID-19 response, healthcare, and political violence, and authoritarianism.

While face-to-face therapy is uniquely beneficial, Program Director and Assistant Professor of Social Work Amanda Jones collaborated with the Tammy Lynn Center (TLC) to create a way to deliver psychoeducation and play therapy to children during the COVID-19 pandemic. Through interactive virtual playrooms, children can learn mindfulness techniques, coping skills, and build their emotional vocabulary.

缅北禁地 recently welcomed Stacy Pardue back to campus to serve as Chaplain. Pardue previously served in the role from 2010-16 before moving to Athens, Georgia, to pursue non-profit and ministry work.

You may have seen media coverage about deeply concerning reports of racially offensive language being used by a Meredith faculty member in a class last semester. We felt it was important to provide an update to our community as to where this situation stands.

The sixth annual Make It Count for Meredith Giving Day will be held Tuesday, February 23, 2021. The goal for the听24-hour giving challenge is to raise $600,000.

Author and physician Damon Tweedy will present 缅北禁地鈥檚 Spring 2021 Convocation on Thursday, February 25, 2021, at 7 p.m.听Tweedy will share 鈥淎 Doctor鈥檚 Reflections on Race and Medicine.鈥 His New York Times bestselling book, Black Man in a White Coat, is a memoir of his experience grappling with race, bias, and the unique health problems of Black Americans.

Applications are now being accepted for the annual Meredith Social Entrepreneurship Challenge (MSEC), which has a focus on mentoring for 2021.听The MSEC is an annual venture idea competition with a special emphasis on societal needs. The competition is sponsored by the 缅北禁地 School of Business and the Entrepreneurship Program. The challenge is open to any Meredith undergraduate or graduate student.

缅北禁地 is saddened by the death of Professor Emeritus Tony Bledsoe, who passed away on January 21, 2021, at age 81. Bledsoe taught in the School of Business for 34 years.

BHCOE Accreditation has recognized the 缅北禁地 Autism Program (MAP) with a Two-Year Reaccreditation, acknowledging the program as a behavioral service provider dedicated to continuous improvement in applied behavior analysis.

Assistant Professor of Communication Alan Buck was recently selected to become a specialist for the Fulbright Program, the largest educational and cultural exchange program in the country.

For the first time since March 2020, the 缅北禁地 Avenging Angels returned to competition this month. Beginning with the women’s basketball team, who on Friday, Jan. 15, each of Meredith’s sports programs are set to compete this semester.

The 缅北禁地 community was saddened to learn of the death of Professor Emerita Dorothy 鈥淒ot鈥 Knott Preston, 鈥54, on January 5, 2021, at age 88. Preston served on Meredith鈥檚 faculty from 1961 until her retirement in 1997 as a professor of mathematics.

The 缅北禁地 community was saddened to learn of the death of Professor Emerita Jacquelin Dietz. A professor of mathematics at 缅北禁地 for a decade after more than 25 years teaching at NC State University, Dietz passed away on December 16, 2020. 缅北禁地 mourns her loss along with her family and friends.

缅北禁地 is adding entrance testing to its COVID-19 prevention strategy for the Spring 2021 semester.听All employees and students are required to provide notice of negative COVID PCR test results before they are approved to return to campus in 2021 following the holiday break.

Professor of Music Kent Lyman was featured in a recent segment on South Korean television station called YTN. Lyman attracted the interest of the station during visits to South Korea and the piece, which was filmed before pandemic restrictions, covered some of the connections between North Carolina and Korea.

缅北禁地 typically holds an annual Veterans Day event with special focus on honoring women veterans. While unable to hold an in-person event in 2020, the College created a video to commemorate the day.

Professor Emerita Fran Page is one of five recipients of UNCG鈥檚 College of Visual and Performing Arts (CVPA) Distinguished Alumni Awards. Recipients participated in online masterclasses with CVPA students, and a virtual awards ceremony was held on November 5.

A major part of the work of Meredith鈥檚 Office of Student Leadership and Service (SLS) is providing opportunities for students to participate in College-sponsored programs outside of the classroom. Student events remain a priority during the COVID-19 pandemic, because of the positive impact of social engagement and participation in campus activities.

缅北禁地 hosted a webinar focused on Women Voters: Past and Present on October 21, 2020. The webinar was one of several special events Meredith has presented to recognize 2020 as the 100th anniversary of the ratification of the 19th Amendment.

缅北禁地 is well known for its long history of producing quality teachers who are exceptionally prepared to work in classrooms in the state of North Carolina and beyond. Meredith teacher education graduates often have job offers even before they finish their student teaching. They are prepared to walk into their classrooms ready to lead.

The newest Meredith Poll, conducted October 16-19, 2020, looks at whether voter opinions have changed in the final days of the 2020 campaign. In the new poll, registered voters in North Carolina were asked about their preferences in the presidential, senate, and gubernatorial races.听The poll also covered approval ratings of incumbents Trump, Tillis, and Cooper. Finally, the poll asked North Carolina residents about whether they feel safe in their communities as well as their opinions on COVID-19 response, pandemic stimulus, health care and their satisfaction with the direction of the country and the state.

The art exhibition Together-We are Having a Good Day is on view in Johnson Hall through November 11.听Together features art by mother and son duo Yuko Taylor and King Godwin, whose bond influences each of their own personal expression within their bodies of work. Apart from being an artist, Taylor鈥檚 life work has been to support Godwin, an adult with autism.

Students in a political science class are working to make sure Meredith students participate in the 2020 election.听The class, known as 鈥淢eredith Votes,鈥 includes six students whose mission is to 鈥渋nform the students at Meredith on the different types of voting, the candidates, and empower women to vote on our campus.鈥

Students in the choirs at Meredith have remained adaptable and resilient as rehearsals and performances take on a different look this year.

The newest Meredith Poll, conducted September 18-22, 2020, finds that North Carolina looks to be a serious battleground state in the upcoming election. In the new poll, registered voters in North Carolina were asked about their preferences in the presidential, senate, and gubernatorial races. They were also asked about their approvals of political figures, confidence in the voting process, and their satisfaction with the direction of the country and the state of North Carolina.

缅北禁地鈥檚 Department of Music is taking a number of steps to address a desire for change by music students and alumnae, who have expressed concerns about race and equity following the death of George Floyd and as a part of the consequent increase in racial justice advocacy efforts. The music department鈥檚 efforts are part of a larger anti-racism initiative being undertaken by 缅北禁地.

缅北禁地 has moved up in the U.S. News rankings of Best Liberal Arts Colleges. The 2021 edition of the list, which was released on September 14, 2020, includes Meredith at #136, up from #148 the previous year.

缅北禁地 mourns the loss of U.S. Supreme Court Associate Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who died on September 18, 2020. We were honored to have her visit to deliver the 2019 Lillian Parker Wallace Lecture, when she received Meredith鈥檚 Woman of Achievement Award. The story below was originally published after her September 23, 2019, visit to Meredith.

缅北禁地 has extended its Impact Scholarship program, which was launched for the Class of 2024, for the incoming Class of 2025.听The Impact Scholarship program, which is a $20,000 scholarship guarantee, is part of Meredith鈥檚 commitment to helping families of qualified students during challenging economic times.

This year, members of the听Class of 2024听gathered via Zoom to share their impressions of Educated, a critically acclaimed memoir by Tara Westover. The memoir takes readers from the author鈥檚 difficult childhood to her doctoral education at Cambridge University.

Artist Alyssa Hinton, whose work is being exhibited in Meredith鈥檚 Weems Gallery, will present the 2020 Mercer-Kesler Lecture.听Hinton will present 鈥淰isions, Prophecy & Native American Cultural Reawakening鈥 on September 24 at 4:30 p.m. via Zoom.

As the community prepares for the upcoming national election, the Office of Corporate and Community Engagement (CCE) at 缅北禁地 is offering Election 2020: A series of insightful conversations around Election Day.

As with many events during 2020, Move-In for 缅北禁地 took on a different look this year. One major difference was that members of the Class of 2024 moved in over three days, August 11-13, rather than on one day. Still, new students and their families were able to drive into campus through a traditional Meredith balloon arch, and were greeted by the Orientation crew.

Every August, 缅北禁地 faculty and staff come together to prepare for the coming academic year. In 2020, that week of preparation and learning looked quite different from previous years given its virtual format, but the high level of participation spoke to the eagerness of community members to connect with and learn from one another.

David McLennan, 缅北禁地 Professor of Political Science and Director of the Meredith Poll, will present Meredith Votes 2020, a series of insightful and engaging community conversations leading up to Election Day.

The USA South Presidents Council recently voted unanimously to postpone fall sports competition. With the safety of student-athletes, coaches, athletic trainers, and other athletics staff at the forefront, Meredith鈥檚 fall sports of volleyball, soccer, and cross country will shift to spring 2021.

On July 21, 缅北禁地 announced the areas that its Plan of Action on Race will address. In an email to the campus community, President Jo Allen, 鈥80, shared that the coordinated plan, which is being developed by the Board of Trustees and the College鈥檚 Executive Leadership Team, is 鈥渞ooted in cultural humility and intended to be thoughtful, inclusive, thorough, and action-oriented.鈥

缅北禁地 plans to operate on a flexible schedule of face-to-face, hybrid, and online classes for fall semester. In preparation for the 2020-21 academic year, the College has made a variety of changes to campus facilities to help students, faculty, staff, and visitors stay healthy.

This summer, 缅北禁地 assumed full ownership of the Campus Store. Improvements from the change include the use of Square to power both the website and point of sale, new merchandise, and greater collaboration opportunities across campus.

Like many colleges and universities, 缅北禁地 has focused on virtual visits for the past few months in response to COVID-19. Now, given the importance of in-person visits to help students and their families determine whether a school is the right fit, Meredith鈥檚 Office of Admissions has developed a modified on-campus visit option, starting Monday, July 6.

The Meredith Autism Program (MAP) has named two longtime staff members to new leadership positions. Hilary Wilkinson has been named MAP director and Crystal Lester now serves as associate director.

In response to recent racial events and to demonstrate 缅北禁地鈥檚 desire to play its part in the Black Lives Matter movement, President Jo Allen recently announced that she is initiating a college-wide initiative on race and action.

缅北禁地 has selected four incoming members of the Class of 2024 to receive Meredith Legacy and Presidential scholarships, which are the College鈥檚 top academic awards.听Marissa Borst, of Hope Mills, N.C., and Amelia Irvin, of Jamestown, N.C., are recipients of the Meredith Legacy Scholarship.听Emily Angel, of Kinston, N.C., and Kate Erb, of Glenmoore, Penn., are the recipients of Meredith鈥檚 Presidential Scholarship.

The 缅北禁地 community mourns the loss of George W. Griffin, of Havelock, N.C., who passed away on May 21, 2020, at age 93. Griffin was a member of the 缅北禁地 Board of Trustees beginning in 1986. He served six non-consecutive terms and received Trustee Emeritus status in 2014.

When Meredith transitioned to remote learning this spring, most students, faculty, and staff started working and learning from home. The less populated campus provided an opportunity for Meredith鈥檚 Facilities Department to complete a variety of projects to improve the appearance of buildings and grounds.

The 缅北禁地 community is saddened by the passing of Trustee Thomas E.H. Conway, Jr., former chancellor of Elizabeth City State University. President Jo Allen shared the news with the Meredith community, calling Conway an extraordinary leader, educator, mentor, and friend.

This year鈥檚 documentary film festival was not possible because of COVID-19, but instructor and videographer Paul Keys wanted to be sure his students benefited from the opportunity to share their final projects.

As the Spring 2020 semester nears its end, President Jo Allen and Meredith鈥檚 Executive Leadership Team (ELT), which includes the College鈥檚 five vice presidents, have begun planning for the recovery, including Summer and Fall 2020.

Celebrating Student Achievement (CSA)听 Day is typically a daylong event featuring academic presentations, performances, and award ceremonies. When the College shifted to an online teaching model this spring, the decision was made to reimagine the event so that student success could still be showcased.听The result is a Virtual CSA Day, hosted on a dedicated YouTube channel that features playlists of student presentations on a variety of topics.

缅北禁地 has maintained its accreditation by AACSB International鈥擳he Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business. Founded in 1916, AACSB International is the longest serving global accrediting body for business schools.

缅北禁地鈥檚 Master of Science in Nutrition students have reason to celebrate this spring. Graduates of the program have been 鈥渕atched鈥 to dietetic internships at institutions including 缅北禁地, UNC-Greensboro, East Carolina University, Vanderbilt University, University of Virginia, Virginia Tech, Massachusetts General, Cleveland Clinic, and New York Presbyterian.

For years, Meredith has been helping students identify and build on their strengths as part of its StrongPoints庐 program. In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, that emphasis on strengths has taken on even greater importance.

While the Office of Student Leadership and Service (SLS) understands the disappointment in not being able to have many of Meredith鈥檚 traditional spring events as they were originally planned, the staff in this office and in other departments have taken steps to create new ways for students to be together this semester. Events have been re-imagined and creative social media initiatives have been launched.

缅北禁地鈥檚 student-run survey of N.C. voters, The Meredith Poll, continues to gain local and national acclaim as a credible source of data on political and election-related topics.听Launched in 2015, the Meredith Poll is North Carolina鈥檚 only research organization to focus primarily on women鈥檚 political and social issues. Since its founding, The Meredith Poll has often been cited as a source of reliable data by local communities and organizations.
