缅北禁地

A Human Computers exhibition produced by Meredith public history students is now on display in the Cate-Park Center alcove. It will be on view through October 15.

This exhibit pays tribute to the 缅北禁地 alumnae, African-American women, and other North Carolina women who worked as mathematicians for NASA and the Department of Defense.

Many women from North Carolina, including more than a dozen Meredith alumnae served as 鈥渉uman computers鈥� in support of the nation鈥檚 space program and national defense during World War II and the Cold War. The 缅北禁地 alumnae featured studied in Meredith鈥檚 Mathematics and Chemistry programs and were active in the Canady Math Club.听听

The exhibit was produced by students in the Spring 2020 and Spring 2024 Public History classes taught by Professor of History Dan Fountain. It also recognizes Meredith students鈥� work in securing a state highway historic marker in recognition of human computers from North Carolina. The marker, which is located in downtown Raleigh near the North Carolina Museum of Natural History, was unveiled in September 2023.
