Recruiting is underway for Meredith鈥檚 inaugural flag football team, which will begin competing in the Spring 2027 season. Last summer, Meredith to add flag football as an official sport, becoming the first USA South conference school to do so.
As one way to gain visibility for Meredith鈥檚 newest sport, Head Coach Bryonne Herring fielded Meredith鈥檚 first-ever flag football camp this fall. The inaugural camp drew 34 participants from across the state and region.
Herring said he wanted to hold the camp to provide participants 鈥渁 college-level experience of the game, and showcase the supportive community that defines Meredith athletics.鈥
His goals for the camp were to provide athletes with an opportunity to build confidence and deepen their connection to the sport at the collegiate level.
鈥淚 wanted participants not only to walk away with improved skills, but also with a sense of connection to our coaching staff and confidence in their place within a growing sport,鈥 he said.
According to Herring, the inaugural camp participants鈥 behavior throughout the camp demonstrated that the experience met the goals set by the coaching staff.
鈥淭he enthusiasm and engagement we saw throughout the camp confirmed that we successfully set the tone for what Meredith flag football represents,鈥 he said.
With more than a decade of experience in football and player development, camps are one step in Herring鈥檚 plan to build relationships with potential players and introduce them to what Meredith Athletics has to offer.
Herring said camps serve 鈥渁s a meaningful entry point for building long-term relationships. It allows us to identify potential student-athletes early, stay connected with them through follow-up clinics, and introduce them to the academic and athletic opportunities Meredith provides.鈥
Camps, he added, also help 鈥渞einforce our presence in the community and demonstrate our commitment to developing women鈥檚 sports in the region.鈥
Herring, who comes to Meredith from SUNY-Brockport, where he coached a club team, was drawn to Meredith because of the opportunity to 鈥shape the program from the ground up and to empower women athletes in a sport that has historically been underrepresented at the collegiate level.鈥澛
Meredith鈥檚 women鈥檚 college mission gave the opportunity added significance for Herring.
鈥淲inning is a goal鈥攄eveloping strong, capable women is the purpose,鈥 he said.
In addition to flag football, Meredith offers 11 other sports: basketball, cross country, field hockey, golf, lacrosse, soccer, softball, tennis, track and field (indoor and outdoor), and volleyball. For more information about Meredith athletics, visit .
