Combining Athletics with Academic Excellence – Avery Puryear

“I chose to come to Meredith for the amazing and top-notch academics. Being a college softball player has been my dream since I was 5 years old, and Meredith allowed that dream to come true while getting a great education.

I knew Meredith was the right place for me after my first visit to the campus with Coach Kim. After taking a tour of the campus and getting to know what Meredith had to offer academically and athletically, I knew 100% that this was the place where I was meant to be.

I chose to major in accounting because of my interest in numbers and the variety of careers accounting offers. I love structure and problem-solving, which immediately clicked with my accounting courses. Accounting is a challenging yet rewarding career, and it sparked my interest because Meredith has one of the top business schools. Accounting will allow me to help people while also being challenged each day.

Dr. Johnson in the accounting department has been the biggest influence on me academically, professionally, and personally. She took the time to get to know me as a person first and then as a student, guiding me through my accounting courses and also through internship interviews. I learned how to problem-solve, think outside the box, and ace interviews because of her guidance. She was always there to grow my confidence and assist me in anything I needed.

My internship experience at Revlon solidified my knowledge in accounting and helped me to realize that accounting is what I see myself doing in the future. The accounting knowledge I learned from Meredith was reinforced during my internship – it was exciting to see everything I learned come together in the real world. I was also able to take experiences from Revlon and use what I learned in the final accounting classes I took at Meredith.

Being a student-athlete at Meredith meant so much to me. I met some of my best friends through softball. I also learned valuable life lessons, such as responsibility, work ethic, and time management, which will stay with me during my career and personal life. The coaches and players made my experience at Meredith so joyful and fun. I was so fortunate to experience the love and commitment that Coach Kim gives to each player. I will always cherish being a 山 softball player and look back on my time here with gratitude.

In college, I discovered that I am resilient and that my faith keeps me strong. Being a student-athlete was not always easy, and I have learned that I can balance many things and that I can do hard things. After my freshman year, I found myself going through a hard time, and I learned to lean on Jesus through both the good and bad times of life. Through my faith in Christ, I can do anything, and I can be resilient to always keep going.

One challenge that seemed to always stand out during my time at Meredith was the feeling of self-doubt. I have always held myself to a higher standard and sought excellence from myself in all things. Whether academically or athletically, anytime I did not feel that I performed to the best of my ability, I would continue to doubt myself and my abilities. I struggled with doubts about my academic abilities, athletic abilities, and self-worth. I learned to overcome this by seeking help from others and, most importantly, Jesus. Knowing that my worth is not determined by a grade or batting average, but by who I am in Christ, has allowed me to overcome any feeling of doubt.

After graduation, I will attend NC State in the fall in pursuit of my Master’s in Accounting (MAC). NC State’s MAC program is one of the best in the country, and I am excited to apply what I learned from Meredith in my classes at NCSU. I am also completing a summer internship before starting the MAC program at a public accounting firm in Henderson, North Carolina.

My strengths of being responsible, hard-working, and disciplined led me to be able to attend graduate school at NC State and land a summer internship. These strengths will allow me to succeed in graduate school and my future career as I will be able to get through any challenging coursework, deadlines, and more.”
