鈥淔ollowing my undergraduate studies in studio art, I completed a post-baccalaureate licensure (PBL) program in art education in 2024 at 缅北禁地. I am now a visual art teacher at Smith Magnet Elementary School teaching K-5.聽
I use my strengths in several ways to support and inspire my students. My developer strength drives my passion for encouraging students to take risks and feel proud of their artistic journey. I naturally see potential in each of my students and love watching them grow as artists and learners. I strive to create lessons that meet them where they are while challenging them to reach new levels of creativity. Whether it鈥檚 guiding a student who struggles with a technique or celebrating small successes along the way, I focus on helping them recognize their progress.聽
My input strength aligns with my commitment to bringing diverse and meaningful content into my art lessons. I am constantly gathering resources and information to connect students to the world through art and enrich their learning environment.
Throughout my academic journey, I encountered numerous challenges, particularly in my first year, such as the COVID-19 pandemic and struggling with my mental health. I was finally adjusting to my new life at Meredith then I moved back home and everything was virtual. When I did get to move back to campus, classes were hybrid, which was still a challenge. As a result, I made the difficult decision to drop my art education major.
Things slowly started to look up when I reached out and opened up to academic advisors, friends, and professors I trusted. My friends and professors were some of my strongest supporters. Emily Howard, head of the art department, demonstrates an admirable level of directness and persistence in her interactions with all students. Her commitment to inclusiveness is evident, as she consistently fosters an environment where diverse perspectives are valued. By providing constructive feedback, she enhances the academic experience for students and cultivates meaningful relationships. She is an exemplary educator and continues to be a friend and mentor post-graduation.聽
By my senior year, I got the hang of things. For the senior exhibition, my artwork showcased the struggles I went through as an undergraduate, which helped me process and gain clarity on the experience. During the PBL program, it was a whole different world. I could go into it with a different viewpoint. The classes were more manageable and I knew when to reach out to professors.聽
Meredith鈥檚 art department and art education courses have equipped me with valuable resources. My experiences at Meredith enhanced my educational qualifications and deepened my commitment to the field of art education. I am confident in guiding students through the obstacles of art and essential life skills.
I plan to continue my teaching journey and look forward to educational opportunities that will benefit me and my students.鈥
