DESCRIPTION:SCREENING SCHEDULE \nPart One \nWon鈥檛 You Be My Dumpling (10 minutes) \nDirector: Jinna Kim \nA delightful short documentary\, this celebration of the dumpling shows that they can come in different forms but be equally tasty to everyone. \nKing of Cats (17 minutes) \nDirector: Kim Best \nA heartfelt tribute to the iconic cat TAAWWD and to Harold 鈥淐atman鈥� Sims\, founder of The American Museum of The House Cat in Sylva\, N.C.\, and the Catman2 cat shelter in nearby Cullowhee\, N.C. \nA Tree Once Grew Here  (7 minutes)\nDirector: Johnnie Semerad \nCaptivating visuals\, animation\, and imagery combine to tell a tale that transcends language and reminds us that we must both nurture our planet and rebalance harmony鈥攂ecause we can no longer afford not to. \nCaswell County Smiles (17 minutes) \nDirector: Fred Motley \nEnjoy selections from some of the performing and fine artists who keep the arts alive in Caswell County \nBite of Benin (35 minutes) \nDirector: Brad Herring\, Ad茅 Carrena \nAdopted at the age of 10 from her homeland in B茅nin\, West Africa\, and raised in an abusive household in Connecticut\, Chef Ad茅 Carrena travels back home on a journey to reclaim her identity through food.聽 \nPart Two \nOur Movement Starts Here (85 minutes)\nDirector: John Rash\, Melanie Dang Ho \nIn 1982\, a rural community in North Carolina mobilized and fought the state鈥檚 plan to site a toxic PCB landfill in their county. Forty years later\, the citizens of Warren County commemorate the anniversary of their protest while inspiring a new generation of climate-justice activists who are starting the fight for their own futures. \nThe festival will conclude with a panel discussion with participating filmmakers\, moderated by Meredith alumna and filmmaker Camden Watts\, 鈥�03. \nThe 缅北禁地 Documentary Film Festival is presented by the 缅北禁地 Department of English with cooperation from Carlyle Campbell Library. \nThe Event is Free and Open to the Public.

DESCRIPTION:A Retrospective of nearly 50 years of Composing: Tom L. Lohr. \nPiano faculty member Tom Lohr celebrates almost 50 years of compositions with special guests Susan McClaskey Lohr\, piano; Sally Thomas\, soprano; and Gordon Kreplin\, guitar. The beginning of this program will include music\, especially for young music students ages 5 and up. \nTom L. Lohr has been an Instructor of Piano and Composition at 缅北禁地 since 1979\, where he teaches piano\, both in the college music department and within the College鈥檚 Community School of Music. Additionally\, he has taught keyboard\, choral arranging\, music theory seminars a course that combines the history of the visual and musical arts. Mr. Lohr served as the Director of the 缅北禁地 Community School of Music (the non-credit division of the Department of Music) for 30 years but relinquished those duties in 2016 to spend more time on other music projects. For more than forty years he coordinated the summer piano camp\, beginner鈥檚 piano camp\, and continues to offer the middle school composition camp\, intensive piano camp\, and high school theory camp.聽 Former students of his have earned degrees from such noted schools as Indiana University\, the Julliard School and Boston Conservatory. \nAll performances are general admission and free unless otherwise indicated.聽 Performance counts as an academic and cultural event for 缅北禁地 students. \nJanuary 26\, 2025\, at 3:00pm\, in Carswell Concert Hall\, Wainwright Music Building.

DESCRIPTION:Come experience what it is like to be a Music Major or Minor for a Day at 缅北禁地! We call this free event MM4D\, and this is your chance to get to know our music faculty\, chat with current students\, and get a feel for our music program and all that it has to offer. While visiting\, you will sit in on a sample music class\, observe/participate in a repertoire class for your area of interest (voice\, piano\, instrumental)\, receive or observe a sample lesson\, will have the option to participate in one of our performance ensembles\, and more. High-school students\, as well as prospective non-traditional and transfer students who intend to major or minor in music are invited to attend. While we encourage a parent or guardian to attend with their student\, it is not required. We do ask for a student鈥檚 parent and emergency contact information.

SUMMARY:Ray & Maya Kilburn Piano and Violin Recital
DESCRIPTION:Ray & Maya Kilburn Piano and Violin Guest Artist Recital \n缅北禁地 is excited to welcome guest artists Ray & Maya Kilburn to perform pieces by L.V. Beethoven\, Astor Piazzolla\, Mel Bonis\, and Sergei Prokofiev. \nMaya Kilburn is a proud recipient of a Kovner Fellowship at The Juilliard School\, where she studies with Donald Weilerstein and Catherine Cho. Previous studies include several years with Mimi Zweig at the Indiana University Jacobs School String Academy\, and earlier studies with Chin Mi Kim and Anna Vayman. Maya plays on a 1710 Alessandro Mezzadri violin made in Ferrara\, Italy\, currently on a 10-year loan. When not playing the violin\, she enjoys cooking\, hanging out with friends\, and spending time with her dogs Cocoa and Sophia. Upcoming engagements include concerto appearances and solo recitals throughout Mexico\, China\, Japan\, and the US. \nPianist Ray Kilburn maintains a successful performing and teaching spanning the United States\, Canada\, Mexico\, Central America\, Europe\, and Asia. Critics have been unanimous in praise of his outstanding artistic temperament and technical abilities. Kilburn holds four performance degrees: the BM and LM from McGill University where his primary teacher was Tom Plaunt\, and the MM and DM degrees from Indiana University Jacobs School of Music\, where his primary teacher was Gyorgy Sebok. Currently on faculty at Ball State University School of Music\, his students have distinguished themselves through winning prizes in national and international competitions and obtaining faculty positions at colleges and universities around the world. His wife soprano Yoko Shimazaki-Kilburn is also on faculty at Ball State University\, and their 21-year-old daughter Maya Kilburn is gaining recognition as a violinist and social media influencer. \nFor more information\, please contact the Music Departmental Assistant\, Natalie Overton (nboverton@meredith.edu) \nJanuary 30\, 2025\, at 7:00pm\, in Carswell Concert Hall\, Wainwright Music Building.
