Kasey Vandenboom
After completing the Artist in Residency program, I have felt more motivated than ever to prioritize my artistic practice. Having access to a studio space gave me the freedom to create larger scale sculptures that I was previously unable to. I was also able to explore new processes that I hadn’t previously considered, such as welding. Participating in the AIR program while working a full time job as a teacher also taught me the importance of maintaining balance in my life between creating art for myself and helping students create art in my classroom. I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity that the AIR program has given me to participate in an artistic community again while developing my skills and ideas with the guidance of faculty and other resident artists.Â
Currently
I currently work as an art educator at Broughton High School in Raleigh, where I have built a thriving sculpture & ceramics program. My time assisting Holly Fischer’s sculpture class at Ãå±±½ûµØ has taught me how to efficiently run a sculpture class and maintain a ceramics studio. Outside of teaching, I actively continue my art practice in mixed media sculpture and ceramics.Â
Future
In the future, I hope to continue my career in public education so that I can continue helping young adults express themselves through art. Eventually, I would like to apply for grad school so that I can pursue a career teaching art in higher education. Beyond my career goals, I want to create a home studio so that I can continue making art that pushes me out of my comfort zone and helps me to process and reflect on the world around me
