If you play sports in high school, you may be thinking about how to continue your love of the game into your college career. When considering a Division III school, one thing to keep in mind is that this environment allows players to fully experience both academic and athletic pursuits.

Division III schools like Meredith provide a balance of academic and athletic opportunities, so students can excel in both areas.

Take it from Kim Scavone, Meredith鈥檚 head softball coach, who says 鈥淥ur athletes receive an incredible education, participate in our many wonderful traditions, study abroad, complete internships in their chosen field of study, and participate in other activities on campus and in the local community. Brittany Preston, 鈥�19, is not only the Avenging Angels basketball team captain, but she is the Meredith Activities Board publicity co-chair, a chief student advisor, and a member of White Iris Circle, an organization focused on student recruitment. An exercise and sports science major, she is also active in undergraduate research, currently exploring the effects of pre-workout supplementation on measures of cognition and performance in female college athletes. Art education major Meredith Wyatt, 鈥�19, is treasurer of Kappa Pi International Art Honors Society and a member of Artists鈥� Alliance. She鈥檚 an Honors Scholar and an athlete on the cross country and track and field teams. She also studied abroad in Italy. Read her Strong Story

Carlee Joseph, 鈥�19, is one of Meredith鈥檚 most decorated lacrosse student-athletes. She led her team to three back-to-back conference championship titles and NCAA tournament appearances. She excelled in the classroom and on the field, collecting numerous awards, including twice being named USA South Player of the Year. The Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association named her its 2018 Division III Scholar-Athlete of the Year. And she did all of this as a dual degree engineering student, pursuing a degree in mathematics at Meredith and a mechanical engineering degree at NC State. Read her Strong Story

Emily Wilkinson, 鈥�19, is a member of the Avenging Angels tennis team, where she was named a two-time USA South All-Academic honoree and collected a USA South Women鈥檚 Tennis All-Sportsmanship Award. While completing a major in child development, she has also begun coursework in Meredith鈥檚 Master of Arts in Teaching program. She鈥檚 been an active community volunteer, including with the Special Olympics of North Carolina and with Meredith鈥檚 Special Populations Dance, an annual event hosted by the psychology department for adults with disabilities. Two-sport student-athlete Kirstie King, 鈥�19, is a three-year starter on Meredith鈥檚 soccer team and a member of the basketball team. As an Honors Scholar and a student-athlete, Emily Skoglund, 鈥�20, has made an impact on and off the volleyball court. As a defensive specialist on the court, she has added several athletic accomplishments to her resume. She is a two-time member of the USA South All-Academic Team and the AVCA Team Academic Award. Along the way, she has been actively involved on campus, participating in the 2018 Emerging Leaders Seminar Series, serving as co-chair for the 2017 Spring Guardian Angel Formal, and being a part of Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society and the Meredith Health Professions Society. Erica Occena, 鈥�18, was a four-year starter on the Meredith softball team while earning a double major in biology and chemistry. She collected three USA South All-Academic honors to go along with a USA South All-Conference honor and two All-East selections. She was an Honors Scholar, chemistry tutor, and a member of the College鈥檚 chapters of Beta Beta Beta National Biological Honors Society, Alpha Lambda Delta National Honor Society, and the International Society for Pharmaceutical Engineering, for which she served as club secretary.
