The college search is often a stressful journey for students. As a parent or family member, you want to do your part to help your student throughout this journey. In today鈥檚 blog, we offer some tips on how families can navigate the college search process.
Let your student take the lead. Going through the college search is likely your student鈥檚 introduction to navigating adult life. As a supporter, you can ask your student to think about different characteristics they鈥檙e looking for in a college, such as academic programs, location, size, campus culture, and student resources and support systems.听听
Keep communication open. Finding the right college is a process; it鈥檒l take time. Check in with your student periodically to make sure they are staying on track and so that they know you鈥檙e there for them. It鈥檚 also important to keep in mind that the process can be overwhelming, so be intentional with how often you bring up the subject. Give your student some space and also engage in conversations about other topics to help manage their stress.听
Visit colleges. Researching colleges online is a great start to the search process and helps prospective students explore what a college offers. At a Meredith visit, your student has the opportunity to meet with faculty and current students, as well as have one-on-one conversations with an admissions counselor.听
